QUARTERLY MEETING

6:30 P.M.

CAMERON ACADEMY

_________________________________________________

From The President - October 2008

Willie Mitchell

First of all, thank you for your thoughtfulness and prayers during my recovery from back surgery.  I am doing fine.  I understand the picnic was very successful and everyone who attended enjoyed themselves. I would like to thank Mrs. Geri Hoover and her committee for an outstanding job. I would like to thank everyone who came out to our October 6th General Membership Meeting and the following officials: State Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon, Mr. Denver McClendon, SA Community College Board Member.

There are several things that need our attention. First of all with the way the housing market is hanging, we need to look at our own neighborhood. We must think about how we can keep the value of our property up. We need to talk to each other about how to improve the appearance of our homes and lawns. I would appreciate any comments you may have that would make a difference at the next UHIA Meeting.  We will be following up on the thoughts of how and what we can do to take a personal interest and pride in our community upkeep.

Hope to see you at the next UHIA Meeting.

Commentary

Do you know who your neighbor is?

By Leon Thomas

Perhaps most people would quickly answer: “Yes”! but, the next question is asked: Where does your neighbor live?  Most likely the answer would be: “Next door” Is the person living next door really your neighbor? “Yes, we have been living next to each other for a long time, plus we are the same ethnicity.”

Yes, the responses align with Webster’s dictionary, but there is a commandment: “…but thou shalt love thou neighbor as thyself…” (Leviticus 19:18) which caused a man to ask Jesus: who is my neighbor? (St. Luke 10:29) Jesus responded with a parable (St. Luke 10:30-37) that clearly illustrates a neighbor is one who in your situation of dire need will do whatever is needed to help you without being asked or not even a promise made to remunerate him for incurred cost, or sometimes places the neighbor in danger of losing his own life—such as going into a burning building or jumping into a large body of water to save someone.

Therefore, it is obvious a neighbor under the Biblical explanation does not necessarily live next door, is not of your ancestry or live in your community.  However, each of us is behooved to treat the person next door, the community and everyone we meet just as we want to be treated.  Simple because one never knows just who may have to help when no one else is around.

Be a Good Neighbor!
